The Secret Behind All Great Masterpieces: Lessons Learned
We all try to forget unpleasant moments in our lives.
However, the central premise of any meaningful philosophy is to look back upon the hardest times of our lives and locate the wisdom and insight necessary from which success and joy can occur. It has been my experience that usually within the anxiety there are seeds of wisdom for us to learn from if we will only learn to look and understand the experience. When you examine your business, life or relationships it is the tough times that will teach you the most.
During the rough times of the Great Depression the music business also almost collapsed. American record companies, which had sold in excess of 200 million records in the mid 1920’s, had seen unit sales drop by 97% by the mid 1930’s. To put it mildly, things were tough! Even the giant Victor phonograph company stopped making phonograph players altogether. However, there was a tiny silver lining in all of this hardship. A certain type of music was gripping regions of the country and offering hope. There was no political message attached to the tunes. No lyrics. It was an earthy, rhythmic, emotional and dynamic music. Its purpose was to make people dance. Huge parties would emerge that would often last for days. Even today music historians marvel how a distinctive and repetitive bass line and energetic rhythm could change the focus of an entire community.
To classify this music as infectious would be an understatement! At its inception this music would be played solo by only one piano player. Since times were tough sometimes two piano players would share the same instrument. Later, there would be as many as six musicians on three pianos all contributing to the infectious power. The result was a celebration of creative energy that everyone could recognize. It was magical. In spite of the economic hardships, people could find genuine joy even if only for a short moment.
The celebrations grew. House parties would turn into block parties. The refrains and melodies would often be played non-stop for what seemed like hours at a time.
Top Musicians of the day could locate work easily once they mastered this art form.
Hope was born against the horrendous economic landscape.
Then in 1938, legendary Jazz Promoter John Hammond saw a huge business opportunity. He organized and promoted a concert in New York City featuring the three masters of this art form. When Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade "Lux" Lewis performed in Carnegie Hall, it launched a national craze. Businesses and clubs had to hop on the bandwagon and get with the program. Newspapers began to assign special editors to cover the ‘music beat’ and report about this incredible energy as its popularity spread into the clubs. Soon all of the “happening” places were featuring top musicians playing these infectious energetic tunes. Club owners seeking to get good reviews and “cash in” would do whatever necessary to bribe the music editors so they could acquire good press. Bribes of free food, free drinks, free women were commonplace. Musicians and club owners understood that one bad review from the critics would kill the good times! Or so they thought…
The name of this musical art form was Boogie-Woogie. The slang term that the musicians gave to the critics was the Boogie Man!
Yes the Boogie Man was the monster who could criticize and sit in judgment.
In spite of his inability to create or understand music they somehow were qualified to evaluate it. The Boogie Man, like an executioner could determine the fate of musicians and club owners with his words. The Boogie Man was fear incarnate. He could kill the party as quickly as the review could be published. The Boogie Man was bad news! Funny thing is most people do not believe in the Boogie Man. At least that is what they tell you to your face! However within this story is the understanding of how success and joy is born and how it dies. Did you “get it?”
In the words of Earl Nightingale, “Don’t Compete. Create!”
Regardless of what is going on in your life you can always play the music and do the dance! Sometimes the most therapeutic thing we can ever create is to purposely put our focus on joy and creation. We are happiest in life when we create and can easily take responsibility for our creations. However we squelch this inherent ability when we consider the evaluation of the creation as being more important than the act of creation itself. Quite frankly joy is perverted and distorted when creation is done primarily for approval. The misery is amplified even further when we make others responsible for the quality of our lives. This is the big lie of the Boogie Man.
Ralph Waldo Emerson stated….”Do not die with your music still in you.”
Very appropriate advice. We all have a mission in life. A purpose which unfolds before our eyes when we manage to overcome our fear of the Boogie Man and just PLAY. Our beliefs determine our reality. Be careful how you interpret the world. It is EXACTLY like that.
It is horrifying to think about how the Boogie Man turns the possibility of a dream into a nightmare. Or how the Boogie Man distorts our own ideas of success and happiness by making us believe that he can stop the music in our lives! All illusions that unfortunately every great artist has embraced at some point in their careers. You are the Music. You are the Dance. Be careful what you agree with!
Stop and think about what life would be like without the telephone, the car, airplanes, electricity, the internet or any other incredible creation that man has created to resolve the problems related to survival. I can assure that these blessed inventions would never have seen the light of day if their creators were concerned about the boogie man. The boogie man is not only a concern over the judgment of others. The boogie man is much more insidious, he represents everything in our life that we cannot take responsibility for. Our blame list so to speak. The boogie man is that part of us that makes us believe that the problem is somewhere over there.
The late Jack Paar once said, “My life seems like one long obstacle course, with me as the chief obstacle.” Sounds to me like he knew how to do battle with the boogie man.
The secret to all masterpieces is that they fuel the imagination with the great possibilities of the human spirit. They transport us from the world of limitations that we regularly experience and remind us of our potential. Whenever we experience a masterpiece it reminds us that the shackles we feel in our daily lives are optional. The funny thing about greatness is that it will always invite you along for the journey. Masterpieces teach us to recognize the joy of creation for the sake of creation. They spur us on to pursue excellence as our birthright. All masterpieces are embodiments of meaning that would have never occurred had they been concerned with the opinions of critics. If you feel something is holding you back look in the mirror and you will discover your boogie man. All great masterpieces are the reminders of what life can be like when we learn to get out of our own way. Create for the sake of creating. Respond to the joy of the moment and dance for the sake of dancing. Play for the sake of playing. Laugh for the sake of laughing. Everything else is a chorus of excuses and limitations.
Once asked to describe the key to creativity, Thomas Alva Edison said said, “Never quit working on your subject until you get what you’re after.” Well, aren’t we ourselves a work in progress? If you plan on creating a masterpiece of your life its time to take the stage, do the dance in spite of the critics. That is the masterpiece lesson of Boogie-Woogie. Create!
Sometimes it takes death to teach us about life. Occasionally we must go through misery to understand joy. And sometimes it takes the slang born in the Great Depression to understand that we will always get whatever we put out attention on. You can Boogie Woogie or you can waltz with the Boogie Man. The choice is always yours!
The happiest you will ever be in life is when you take responsibility for your creations and create! It is what it is. Take the stage, do the dance and know that the only thing that can squash the music is YOU! The Boogie Man has no power over those who create for the simple joy they receive from the act of creation. That’s the bees knees, the eels hips and the elephants eyebrows. Got it? Therein lies the Secret of All the Great Masterpieces daddy-o! Your life is your Music. Do the dance!
“Stix you start bangin those tubs! Chops you lay down the line…it’s time to get this party happening! One…Two…Three…Four!”

Why Are Manhole Covers Round?
Questions 101
The experts tell us that we each have somewhere around 60,000 thoughts every single day. What most people don’t realize is that the average person asks themselves the same questions over and over again.
Same question. Same Answer. Within this pattern is a trap of monumental proportions.
A true treadmill.
“Why does this always happen to me?”
“How come I never have enough money?”
“Will my business ever be successful?”
“Why aren’t I making any sales?”
Boring! Tragic!
There is much to be learned by understanding that the quality of your life depends upon the questions that you constantly ask yourself. If you want to experience the type of life you truly deserve we need to shake things up a bit the Microsoft Way!
Focus the Microsoft Way!
Bill Gates is a puzzle aficionado. I was fascinated with this because puzzles were originally created as a means of hiding or disguising knowledge by breaking the wisdom down into smaller pieces. Long ago I learned that the best teachers were those that asked the most intriguing questions. Needless to say, the same can be said of companies.
This list of questions is fascinating and will definitely stretch your boundaries. Remember….think outside the box, look at them as a puzzle and search for the possibilities. The sky is the LIMIT! May the creative force be with you!
“Why are manhole covers round?”
“How many gas stations are there in the United States?”
“How are M&M’s made?”
“You have been assigned to design Bill Gates bathroom. Naturally, cost is not a consideration. You may not speak to Bill. What would you do?”
“How would you explain how to use Microsoft Excel to your grandma?”
“Explain a scenario for testing a salt shaker.”
“How would you design a coffee-machine for an automobile.”
“How would you go about building a keyboard for 1-handed users?”
“How would you build an alarm clock for deaf people?”
Interesting aren’t they? Were you disturbed by these questions? Or were you fascinated by the possibilities they presented? I can understand why Microsoft is such a successful organization when creativity of this nature is expected right from the first job interview.
Internet Marketing Expert, Mark Hendricks said it best when he stated; “Problems have solutions, they are made that way.”
Apply this logic to your life and business!
It seems that the software developers Microsoft first ask themselves, “what is it that you want to experience?” Then, they build a belief system to ensure that experience is supported and created. This is incredibly shrewd knowledge that we can all apply to our lives and businesses.
Upon first reading the questions I couldn't help but sympathize with those prospective employees who had perfect scholastic records but lacked the imagination to confront the possibilities. Success in life often has very little to do with book smarts. Great technology starts with great attitude.
So what is it that you want to experience in your life or business? Believe it or not, limitations live only in your mind. But if you use your imagination, your possibilities become limitless.
Those individuals who live truly fulfilling lives discover that they have managed to challenge their current realities by confronting their imaginations for what is truly possible. When I worked through the above questions I quickly discovered that “HOW” I confronted a problem determined the RESULT I could achieve. How quickly can you change your beliefs about what is possible?
Albert Einstein once said that “the mind that solves a problem is very different from the mind that first confronted it.” From this simple statement we can begin to appreciate that within every question lies either a prison of limitations or an endless series of possibilities. The choice is clearly yours.
So the next time you are confronted with a problem in your business or personal life that seems monumental, I challenge you to ask yourself….”Why are manhole covers round?”
That ought to change your focus around long enough to be able to look at the problem through a new set of eyes.

Before You Think That Next Thought!
Researchers have discovered that the average person thinks anywhere between 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts per day. Since the majority of us spend anywhere from 16-18 hours awake each day, we think a thought on average about every 1.1 seconds. That’s a whole lot of thinking going on. With this much thinking taking place there is nothing more important than to focus that energy on a meaningful goal that targets your objective. Whether you are an individual or business manager looking to improve your own condition, the GOAL is the instrument that puts order and purpose into all of this thought energy. Your thoughts lead to action. Your actions create habits. And the habits of your life will determine your ultimate destiny.
The principal premise of the personal development movement is that thoughts become things and that we get whatever we focus upon most. The questions that I think are worth asking are:
a) If thoughts are our currency for acquiring what we want, then what is it that you are spending your currency on?
b) Are you getting a good deal?
c) Are you experiencing the life you deserve?
I have yet to meet someone who claims to like setting goals. Most of us have tried goal setting at some point in our life and failed and just decided it was too much of a hassle. When we come to realize that the goal is comparable to a canvas for an artist we then begin to recognize the importance of goals in channeling our energy towards a desired purpose. The 60,000 thoughts are going to be there day in and day out. It would make good sense to focus those thoughts to an area that would result in a marked improvement of your life.
We are all familiar with the retail buying experience. We walk into a store. Locate the merchandise we want. Pay for it. Take it home. I submit that we engage in this exact same experience in designing our lives. Problem is that when our lives are not going the way we want we are unwilling to admit that we created that condition. It takes a great deal of courage to admit that our belief system might need some rewiring if we are not leading the lives we want.
Look around you right now at your surroundings. Everything that you own is a product of your thoughts. Likewise, everything that you don’t own is a product of your thoughts. Some quality thoughts are considered “too expensive” to even consider contemplating so we never even entertain them. When is the last time that you reminded yourself how “awesome” you are in spite of whatever problems are lurking in your life?
So we often spend our time with the thoughts that are most real to us and the thoughts that we know we can afford. Funny thing is that we have a budget of 60,000 thoughts each day to create whatever we want. In spite of that possibility so much of humanity traps itself in the “closeout thoughts aisle” and then wonders why life has become a battle for basic survival.
Here are a few of the more famous closeout aisle thought patterns:
“It’s just the way I am. I can’t help it.”
”I can’t control what I think.”
“They are just thoughts for Gods sake! That doesn’t matter!”
”I just feel that way and there is nothing I can do about it.”
The reality is that we CAN help it. There is no more important skill in life than learning to control the focus of our mind. In so doing, we can literally change our destiny. Every decision you make stems for the viewpoint of what you think you are and the value you place upon yourself. In the blink of an eye you can change your beliefs of what is possible and recognize that those limitations you encounter are all part of a flawed belief system.
I spent about thirty minutes trying to log my thoughts. Within minutes I discovered that my focus was literally “all over the universe.” Hundreds of disjointed thoughts entered and left my consciousness in a matter of minutes. Trying to keep track of them all was an exercise in futility. What this simple exercise taught me though was to understand the importance of goals. A goal certainly adds a focus and structure to thinking. The more ambitious the goal the more it forces us out of the “closeout aisle” and into the realization that the biggest obstacle in our lives is usually ‘us.’ The one thing I can guarantee you is that you will spend your thought budget every single day. Consciously or unconsciously you will think one thought every 1.1 seconds. With this being the case don’t you think it might be a good idea to make a concerted effort to focus your attention on the things that you want to create? Isn’t that the entire purpose behind having goals? Isn’t that the entire purpose to happy living?
A good friend of mine is working diligently on expanding his business. The one thing he is focused on is understanding that his growth in the past was a direct result of his thinking. Now as he confronts the future he recognizes that his thinking has become the obstacle to getting to the next level. Interesting dilemma isn’t it? You want to grow but you have to be willing to change your thoughts to do so.
Sounds real easy until you have to confront this issue yourself.
The one question that he reiterates to me every time we speak is… “What would a person have to believe and think about regularly to experience this?”
I have no doubt that within this question lies all the wisdom that an individual or organization would ever need to be able to achieve whatever they wanted.
“What would a person have to believe and think about regularly to experience this?”
As I started asking myself that question I began to uncover counterproductive illusions about beliefs, ideas and thoughts that I nurture without even realizing it. Maybe you can relate? It reminds of the comment Mark Twain once made when he said, “I have been through some really terrible stressful things in my life..........some of them which actually happened.”
The secret of business success is ridiculously simple. So much so that we often dismiss it. What thoughts have you planted that are creating your current experience? What illusions do you regularly entertain that prevent you from being responsible for every area of your life? You can blame others for the unhappiness you feel, or you can take responsibility for your life. But you cannot do both. You must make a choice.
The 'divinity that shapes your destiny' is you!
Every day for the rest of your life you will think roughly 60,000 thoughts. Unless you focus that energy into some meaningful purpose you are doing yourself a huge disservice. Set ambitious goals for yourself and you will be well on your way to choosing the best thoughts energy can buy! The focus that this will create in your life will speak volumes. A question that will assist you in this regard whenever you experience a setback is: “What would a person have to believe and think about regularly to experience this?”
Think about what you think about, before you think that next thought!
Be careful with what you agree with!

Be Realistic: Create a Miracle!
Money? Status? Success? A Beautiful Home? A Prosperous Business? A Loving Relationship?
Now let me ask you a super blunt question: Why don’t you have it yet?
A few months ago I attended a seminar. One of the speakers began his presentation with what I initially considered a very confrontational remark. He paused very dramatically and bellowed… “What lies do you keep telling yourself?” Although the room fell deafly silent, we all knew that his question truly touched a nerve. That question has echoed in the hollows of my mind ever since.
“What lies do you keep telling yourself?”
“You’re calling me a liar?” “All the lies?” “How much time do you have?” “That’s not a lie, that’s the truth!”
The responses that were firing up to that question were racing through my mind at the speed of light.
In Life We Can Have Results or Reasons. If you are not getting the results you want, your reasons are the lies that you keep telling yourself. You can try to argue with that statement but its kind of like wrestling with the wind, it will keep you real busy but you really won’t get anywhere. Lies create the idea that we are powerless to make things any different than the way they are.
I hate to admit it but we are all liars. We love our reasons and will go to extreme lengths to hold onto them. After all, our reasons are our stories, which define us.
Those experiences “made us who we are today!” It’s just the way things are……..
Results or reasons. Which do you have more of? If you answered reasons, its time to analyze the lies. I speak from experience. I spent the first thirty years of my life studying what I should believe in. Studied all the great reasons. Read all the great philosophers, not once did anybody ask me…..”What is it that you want to experience with all these ideas?” So I got a little top heavy on reasons and a little short on results.
The problem with having so many reasons is that eventually these reasons create a logic of limitations. They are like a virus that creates “a story” that runs in the background of your minds hard drive. Whenever we see something that we want to create, the first thing we bump into is these beliefs (reasons) that have shaped our experience thus far. And so the battle ensues. Possibilities vs. Limitations. The Grudge Match.
Its like a counterproductive stealth message has been implanted in your mind, “You never seem to really win at anything, so don’t expect much here!” This message brought to you by your sponsor, “limiting lives is what we do!”
We all search for meaning in life. However sometimes life is meaningless. It just “is.”
The critical moments that shape our lives are when we define our experience and declare….”what this means is (fill in the blank).” If the statement that we make at this crucial moment, in filling in the blank, even mildly disempowers us, we empower the logic of limitations to control our perspective from that moment forward.
Don’t believe me? Here are some famous examples for you to try on for size:
Oprah Winfrey was fired from one of her first jobs as a television reporter and told that “She wasn’t fit for TV.” How do you think she defined that moment?
After his first performance on the Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley was banned from returning and told, “You ain’t going nowhere son!” At that crucial moment do you think the King of Rock created a message of possibility or limitation?
Life just is. Sometimes when we look for meaning we might want to remember that.
What’s your story? (“What this means is________________”)
Have you ever been fired, rejected, heartbroken, mistreated, insulted? How did you define the moment? I only ask, because that agreement has shaped your reality. Be Careful What You Agree With! The Results Can Be Lethal.
Now what did you say you really wanted in your life?
Listen carefully and you’ll hear those reasons whispering their logic of limitations! It’s no big deal if you hear the “stories” from time to time. The question is what are you going to do about it?
Mark Twain once commented that “life does not consist, mainly or even largely of facts or happenings. It consists mainly of the stream of thought forever flowing through ones head.” Our REASONS create our definitions and create the energy of our life. Change our definitions and you change your experience. Change your meanings you alter your destiny. Life does not give us what we want. Life gives us whatever we expect. Life just is. The meaning that we attach to the events of our life defines our experience and creates the thoughts that allow us to create abundance or limitation.
When I was a kid I absolutely loved to read the cartoons and comics in the back of the newspaper. They made me laugh with glee. Now those cartoons were essentially a picture being defined by a clever or witty caption. One day I got the bright idea that I was going to change the captions on those cartoons and see if I could make them funnier. Isn’t life the same way? Your pictures are your experiences. Your captions are your beliefs. Do you have the courage to change your own captions? It’s your life after all. The only limitation we possess is the idea that there are limitations. Did you write your own captions or did you allow someone else to write them for you?
We all have a huge investment in what we have come to know. However, sometimes what we know has nothing to do with what we need to know to be successful.
Sometimes what we know has nothing to do with what we need to know to be happy!
To change all of that you need to locate your limiting beliefs and say goodbye to them.
Change the captions of your life. Reasons or Results.
Marilyn Voss Savant writes a weekly column for Parade magazine. She is acclaimed as the person with the highest IQ on record. When she was asked by one of her readers about life, she responded with ““Feeling is what you get for thinking the way you do!”
True poetry. To that I would simply add, be careful what you agree with it’ll mess up your focus.
Consider this for a second: How many beliefs were you born with? How many beliefs do you have today? Along the way you have acquired a lot of baggage that is weighing you down. The problem most of us run into is that we believe in things that are “just not so”, but we lead our lives in alignment with those lousy definitions and experiences to make them “so.” It might be BELIEF-ECTOMY time.
One of the central tenets of the personal development movement is that we become whatever we focus upon most. Fifty years ago Earl Nightingale published his bestseller “The Strangest Secret” and made us realize that our focus creates our destiny. Web poet, adventurer and philosopher Mike Dooley of www.tut.com has eloquently modernized and improved upon this statement when he states, “Thoughts Become Things. Choose the Good Ones!” Most people don’t get what they really want because their focus is fuzzy at best. Do you really know what you are focused on? Before you answer that question too quickly recognize that your focus has been responsible for creating your life up until this point. Your agreements shape your reality…. so be careful what you agree with.
So what is it that you really want?
My advice is simple. Be Careful What You Agree With and Then Focus, Focus, Refocus and Refocus some more. And when you think you are through focusing, focus again.
You wouldn’t drive to your destination fixated on the rear view mirror. Reasons or Results. Be Realistic: Create A Miracle!

Whatever It Takes!
The sign simply says…..”Whatever it takes.”
Short. Simple. To the Point.
“Whatever it takes,” means exactly that. That I will do “whatever it takes” to get what I really want. It is the best description that I have ever been able to come up with to summarize the entrepreneurial experience.
Decision. Commitment. Result.
Something I pretty much had ingrained into my subconscious, playing sports as a kid.
Make the Decision.
Commit to that outcome. Visualize.
Experience that Result.
With my friends and colleagues I abbreviate and say…W.I.T. I’ll often refer to individuals as either having W.I.T or not. Y’know it’s like in the Rocky movies…”the eye of the tiger.” You can tell when someone has W.I.T and when someone is faking W.I.T.. Or, worse yet when someone doesn’t even know about it!
Walt Disney suffered through a bankruptcy and breakdown. Milton Hershey experienced bankruptcy in his pursuit as the “chocolate king.”
H.J. Heinz saw his newborn company forced into liquidation. All these individuals understood W.I.T.
It often confounds me though how many people will never understand what “whatever it takes” really means?
It seems that I developed my understanding of this philosophy through hardship. A tough teacher but an effective one nonetheless.
Maybe you can relate.
When I first started my life as an entrepreneur I thought I was pretty focused on what I wanted. Instead I got the exact opposite. Working long hours for little or no pay, dealing with creditors, angry customers, unresponsive vendors, indifferent intermediaries, idiotic bankers, erratic sales, loaning money to the company, etc. Quite frustrating until I discovered that all of that had been a training ground of sorts that taught me the alchemy of turning problems into opportunities. The one characteristic that every great businessperson must possess.
Whatever it takes. Problems into Opportunities.
W.I.T made me understand that it is not what happens to you. W.I.T makes you look at what are you going to do about it?
Before I had discovered W.I.T I had never realized that I had a “BLAME” list that was responsible for my circumstances. There were so many problems standing in the way of my success. I was convinced that I needed less problems. “If Only’s” so to speak….
I rationalized that successful people had less problems than I did which allowed them to be successful. LOL! I hate to admit it, but it is true.
“Well you know the economy…”
“But the Government….”
“If I only had more money…”
“Its all in who you know….”
All of these are huge lies which will prevent you from understanding “W.I.T.”
Everybody has problems. But problems begin to dissolve when you acquire skills. I was guilty of wishing and hoping for less problems. What I needed though was better skills. Without skills your focus gravitates to the problem. A very poor focus indeed.
How often do you complain? Most of us are not conscious of how regularly we demonstrate that our “FOCUS” is on the problem and not the solution. I was thinking about this the other day when I overheard a group of employees whining about their circumstances. It reminded me of my “BLAME LIST.” No W.I.T.
One of the benefits of being an employee is not having to take TOTAL responsibility for your life. Its made me realize that rarely have I observed successful individuals complain about their circumstances. It is a major distinction between people who exhibit entrepreneurial flair and those who will always remain employees. W.I.T.
The biggest issue that I have found with success is actually defining “the word” SUCCESS on my own terms. Over the years I have developed a love affair with dictionaries. You might remember those books our ancestors used in the pre-search engine days. Anyway, I use dictionaries regularly to see how they define a word. What has become fascinating about this is that dictionaries often disagree with one another….kind of like the search engines do today.
If you look up the word success in most dictionaries it will normally come up with some variations of the following ideas:
accomplishment, achievement, attainment; triumph, victory
And my experience has been that these synonyms promote the following viewpoints:
When you get what you want then you can be happy.
Life begins when you get X.
What you don’t have is better that what you do have.
More is better.
I find these perspectives woefully inadequate for truly defining the elements of a successful life. Until you decide what success means to you, inadvertently you will fall for one of these perspectives. The key is defining SUCCESS based upon what is ultimately significant to your life, on your own terms, by your own design.
For me, W.I.T. is a wonderful definition of SUCCESS. Football coach and legend Vince Lombardi said, “The pride of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” If anybody understood W.I.T, it was Vince Lombardi.
I, also however am reminded of the French prisoner Papillon who was unjustly condemned to life imprisonment on Devils Island. He was disturbed by a recurring nightmare. His dream was that he stood before a harsh tribunal.
“You are charged,” they would shout, “with a wasted life. How do you plead?”
“Guilty.” He would mutter. “I plead guilty.” Papillon, the prisoner knew that to waste his life under the control of others was WASTE.
He also consistently pursued his freedom. W.I.T.
Life is essentially composed of energy, time and space. To ultimately live a successful life would mean that we intensely understand these basic elements and invest them wisely without waste in pursuit of our goal.. The rich have money. The successful individual has a rich entrepreneurial life and lives it intensely.
Success is a passionate love affair with life. W.I.T. On your own terms, by your own design.
So be it!

Reinventing Failure: Designing Success
I am fascinated by problems. I like to think of myself as a solution oriented individual. However when problems creep into my life as they always do I know that I am in for a major learning experience.
I just finished reading a book this week that belongs on the bookshelf of every entrepreneur. It is called “Juice, The Creative Fuel That Drives World-Class Inventors by Evan I. Schwartz.” This book allows you to take a peek inside the labs of the brightest minds and better understand how they relentlessly question and discover the infinite number of ways that we can imagine and create solutions. The book is an awesome expose on how world class inventors on the planet search for problems, seek to understand them and develop solutions that can only come about by perceiving the problem in a different manner. Every entrepreneur should read this book! It is chock full of wisdom that we can apply to our business lives.
Albert Einstein once commented that the most fundamental question we can ever ask ourselves is whether or not the universe we live in is friendly or hostile. He hypothesized that your answer to that question would determine your destiny. I feel that most people have decided that the universe is hostile. In so doing their immediate response to any problem only compounds the hostility. However, the great minds always teach us that regardless of the problem there is a major lesson to be understood if we only learn to look for it. The history of the world is literally the history of transformative breakthroughs.
In the book ““Juice, The Creative Fuel That Drives World-Class Inventors by Evan I. Schwartz” the author clearly demonstrates that the one factor that separates world class inventors from wannabes is that they celebrate the feedback they receive from FAILURE. The most innovative minds recognize that within every failure lies the true and genuine information that is required to learn how to better understand the problem and overcome the obstacles that it presents. They are fascinated by the feedback they receive and are consistently focused on experimenting further because of the feedback that will provide.
A powerful lesson for all of us! Failure is feedback and within that feedback is the wisdom of incredible success. Or as Dr. Wayne Dyer as stated, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Take for example the story of Dean Kamen the inventor of the Segway, the two wheeled personal electronic vehicle that is revolutionizing transportation in our major cities. One day in 1990, Kamen witnessed a wheelchair bound man trying to navigate a curb en route to a shopping center. He followed the man into an ice cream store and was astonished at how the man struggled to reach for the counter and grab his ice cream cone. Within that experience Kamen was both outraged and inspired. The seeds of the Segway were born.
Two years later after numerous disappointments Kamen slipped on a wet bathroom floor and realized that the real problem he was confronting in his technology was one of balance. He and his team of engineers honed in on the enabling technology of electronic gyroscopes that could provide “automatic balance.” It was only after years and years of failure and celebrating the feedback he received that they could focus on the successful introduction of the Segway prototype. Today, according to Kamen the Segway is the answer to the urban transportation problem. 43% of the world’s gas is used by cars and almost 20% of individuals’ disposable income goes to car payments and gasoline. The market for the Segway is several billion people! A fascinating creation brought about by someone who simply disagreed with limitations imposed by the status quo.
What is your greatest problem in life right now?
What is the greatest problem in your business?
